For people passionate about photography - amateur and professional.

From what I can gather it's like tennis elbow but I don't play tennis enough so it must be from the camera.!! The annoying thing is I have a Canon 5D which is one of the lightest pro cameras out there..am I doomed or can anyone suggest anything..don't tell me to use a tripod..I'm not that sort of gal!!

I think the site is great by the way, well done, am very pleased to be here!

Hi there.it sounds like a thing i used to get after doin a long stint on the guitar,i found that locking your fingers and stretching your arms out in front of you so that your fingers are facing you and your palms are out and holding that for a couple of minutes before i did anything guitar wise really helped. Its just a stetching thing but it may help? good luck, love your photos by the way.

Hi Susan

Doctor Ian Phillips-McLaren here :-) I used to get a similar thing cycling, when pulling the brakes on the bike, and all my tendons from my wrist up to my elbows would get inflamed, it was bloody sore, It turned out that my brakes were in the wrong position, bizarre. I don't think there's really anything you can do about it other than change the way you hold the camera maybe, it's repetitive strain....... I'm sure that never helped you one iota.

I get the elbow problem more in my busy season when I'm on the computer a lot editing. From time to time its from shooting...that usually gives me a sore index finger. Just take lots of breaks and be as ergonomically proper as you can...these old bodies do wear out though I suspect you're a "young un"....oh, I forgot...I get a sore neck from the camera strap almost every shoot (20D).

I had a really weird one a couple of years ago... I used to hold my camera, while I was walking, by the grip using three fingers... it just hung nicely. Except with an 80-200 2.8 on it, then my fingers would do this spasm thing. Didn't like that at all. Under pressure - in difficult places or events - I have found myself gripping a camera way too hard which used to make my arm ache... just my 0.02c worth.

the spasm is a symtom of something called, "De Quervains Disease" or tenosynovitis and also linked to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Real time medical problems that can be eased by looking at the ergonomics of how you carry and use your equipment. I like to use just a hand grip but with a large 2.8 lens I am now finding chest harnesses to be a better option for support, you have to learn to relax your grip, just like a soldier squeezes a trigger rather than snatches even under immense pressure of battle.

blah blah blah off on soap box again

I've just had a couple of weeks off and it feels a bit better now I have to admit...mind you with a HUGE baby as well as a heavy camera, I'm not sure what is to blame really...

Road photos across USA

Hi, Im planning on doing a trip across US starting L.A. all route 66 ending in Chicago and then to New York.
Any tips of things that I can find to shoot along the way ?
It can be anything, from sightseeing to a famous crazy guy in a town.

Regards,

Diego

Electric Shock

I did the second part of the Littlewoods pools shoot yesterday, got off to a great start, we hired this large studio in Battersea, London. I was quite happy setting up my lights, the studio manager pointed me in the direction of there extention leads.

I picked up this coiled extension lead, plugged it into the wall, like you do and thought great this will do the trick, so I walked over to one of my strobes holding the end of the extension lead when WALLOP!!! yep, one hell of an electric shock w… Continue

Guardian Rights Grab

Hi Folks,

This is the letter I have just sent to Chris Elliott at the Guardian. Now he won't care what I say, probably won't care if a score of us write. But if every single photographer reading this were to write, then GNM might just listen.

Just remember, selling rights to our work is what makes us Professional photographers. If our clients start eroding those rights further, along with that fact that there is simply less work around today, then more of us will find it impossible to make a l… Continue
