I am currently travelling South America and find my Canon 5Dmk2 screams mug me! I don't like hiding it away as need it out to use it...otherwise there was no point in bringing it right?

So I have (in true eccentric British mode) disguised it by changing the strap to a generic black one and covered all the brand names with black insulation tape. Am I a freak? Am I alone in this? Well not so...

On the road I have seen some ingenious camouflaging to make an expensive camera look like it is ready for the scrap heap. Often using a similar system to mine with black tape to hide brand names etc, I have seen 5 fellow travellers disguising their cameras.

The most effective was the use of red tape on a black Canon 5DMK2 that literally looked like it was about to fall to pieces..but on talking to the chap it was newer than mine!

So has anyone else seen this method of disguise being used? Or does anyone know of a better method?

I will keep you posted to let you know if it works....as I enter Brazil :)

Hi Adam, I hope your having a ball out there, you lucky so and so.

I have seen people use the black tape before and it took a while for me to realise why they were doing it. I've seen the odd camera going around London dressed like that.

I don't know of any other methods.

Just thought I'd say hi and wish you luck.

Hi Ian,

Yes it's odd to see and probably only stops the "steal to order" thefts as some criminals are specificaly looking for a certain camera that there is demand for. But mine still looks like a big expensive camera unfortunately.

Take care Ian and hope all is well mate

not to be funny but you are a target full stop. Even an OLD camera is worth something to someone out there.

Best defence method-----------9mm auto

best luck and enjoy

Have heard the "City of God" area is particularly bad,be careful. Tape and phony ding mark are only methods I have seen. Like make-up on a model.

Best Luck,Good Journey!

Am actually in Bolivia now and for the first time ever I have had two failed attempts at mugging/pickpocketing in La Paz...however both times it was large groups of locals getting close and surrounding me and both times they went for my bag and wallet and not my camera! Could be the old tape saved the day...

If you are curious, to get out of this situation I found shouting at the top of my lungs "Thief, Police!" saved me (well my stuff, they weren't violent thankfully, just a bit intense and hands on). Just glad I have comprehensive Worldwide Camera Insurance!

Having spent the best part of five years wandering around Thailand and Asia with such a camera, I can appreciate your concerns. I (touch wood) haven't had any problems yet, but I'd say South America is a far more worrying destination. I taped my logos etc but the fact remains that with the massive 24-70 I use, combined with a battery pack, there's no hiding you have a damn expensive object in your hands. A friend of mine carries his camera in a very cheap battered backpack and only pulls the camera out when necessary ie doesn't have it hanging round his neck.
Recently, I actually got fed up of carting the dead weight of my canon 5D about and at about the same time, I started experimenting with using film. I now feel much more confident walking round with my old Rollei which, when it's in it's box looks more like a gas mask!
All the best with your travels.

Road photos across USA

Hi, Im planning on doing a trip across US starting L.A. all route 66 ending in Chicago and then to New York.
Any tips of things that I can find to shoot along the way ?
It can be anything, from sightseeing to a famous crazy guy in a town.

Diego

Electric Shock

I did the second part of the Littlewoods pools shoot yesterday, got off to a great start, we hired this large studio in Battersea, London. I was quite happy setting up my lights, the studio manager pointed me in the direction of there extention leads.

I picked up this coiled extension lead, plugged it into the wall, like you do and thought great this will do the trick, so I walked over to one of my strobes holding the end of the extension lead when WALLOP!!! yep, one hell of an electric shock w… Continue

Guardian Rights Grab

Hi Folks,

This is the letter I have just sent to Chris Elliott at the Guardian. Now he won't care what I say, probably won't care if a score of us write. But if every single photographer reading this were to write, then GNM might just listen.

Just remember, selling rights to our work is what makes us Professional photographers. If our clients start eroding those rights further, along with that fact that there is simply less work around today, then more of us will find it impossible to make a l… Continue
