I'm not sure if your being serious or playing around : ) I'll take it as you being serious - I've been doing this for a living now for over 20 years and I've never had a camera that chooses the ISO for you (I'm sure there are plenty of point and shoot cameras out there that do), I personally think that it's bad enough that a professional camera can choose shutter speed and or aperture but there you go that's just my opinion, I cut my teeth on a Mamiya RB which is totally manual and had to shoot on transparency where there is only a half stop leeway.

So to answer your question, I don't think it's a cock up, I'm sure Canon probably just think that who ever is buying the camera knows how to use it.

LOL, just curious as to why the Nikon D3 has the auto iso option but not the mark111. I cut my teeth on a Zenit E and you dont get much more manual than that!

I enjoy the fact that some functions can be automated to enhance use in certain situations, the fact that you are no longer stuck to a set film speed now we have adjustable gain sensors in the digital era is useful so why not automate it to assist a user, Nikon Do

I didn't realise that the Nikon d 3 had that function, bizarre! but then again I'm sure my cameras probably do loads of stuff that I don't know about either, I'm sure they probably do the dishes these day's.

Surely if the camera does the automation then it can also be set manually?

Is it to assit the user or is it to make it easier for the user that doesn't know how?

When I was starting out with an entry level camera, Auto ISO was my biggest nightmare at one point. I just found the camera whacked up the ISO to an unacceptable level that just damaged the image with noise. So for me that was the first thing to switch off. The good news was that this was the factor that got me shooting in Manual mode :) I guess it's a different ball game with a 1 series...

Well I do try and shoot everything with a setting of iso100 but sometimes you just got live with some noise. The point I was trying to show albeit badly is that yet again Nikon do one and Canon don't. I love my 40D canon and everything it does including auto iso but the ids mark 3 realy REALLY frustrates me. Maybe it is me, perhaps I am not good enough or don't deserve to operate pro kit but given a choice of taking one or other body, lately, I opt for the 40D everytime.

No.

Far too many 'photographers' rely on their equipment to make their decisions for them.

Start thinking Zenit E again and you will be a better photographer. I tell my camera what to do, I don't let it make decsions for me.

I was hand holding 300 2.8s and shooting manual exposure and manual focus long before the current batch of Japanese neck jewelry was even thought of. Few other than the most expensiove lenses have even a half chance of being as accurate as a smooth and efficient experienced manuyal operator.

Auto ISO - a joke no?

Road photos across USA

Hi, Im planning on doing a trip across US starting L.A. all route 66 ending in Chicago and then to New York.
Any tips of things that I can find to shoot along the way ?
It can be anything, from sightseeing to a famous crazy guy in a town.

Regards,

Diego

Electric Shock

I did the second part of the Littlewoods pools shoot yesterday, got off to a great start, we hired this large studio in Battersea, London. I was quite happy setting up my lights, the studio manager pointed me in the direction of there extention leads.

I picked up this coiled extension lead, plugged it into the wall, like you do and thought great this will do the trick, so I walked over to one of my strobes holding the end of the extension lead when WALLOP!!! yep, one hell of an electric shock w… Continue

Guardian Rights Grab

Hi Folks,

This is the letter I have just sent to Chris Elliott at the Guardian. Now he won't care what I say, probably won't care if a score of us write. But if every single photographer reading this were to write, then GNM might just listen.

Just remember, selling rights to our work is what makes us Professional photographers. If our clients start eroding those rights further, along with that fact that there is simply less work around today, then more of us will find it impossible to make a l… Continue
